Ascension

This could be the sky Jesus flew up through
And this could be the ground with the city around
Where he left his disciples to wait for him too

Because we still stand looking where he went
Even though the angel is here we don’t seem to hear
That he went away so we could stay and be sent

Perhaps we are those same five hundred fed
Who want to be given things and make for us kings
And forget about all the hard things that he said

Fall to the ground and die, even so send I you
You will have tribulation in every nation
And they think they are serving God when they do

And we did come to listen and not to be fed
But we still ate the fish and made a new wish
All he wants is to give us him in wine and bread

In the upper room when the fire comes down
Then we all will be filled just as Jesus willed
With much more than enough spirit to go around

And in this same sky through which Jesus flew
He again will appear to those waiting here
Like his going, his coming could be today too
