Authorial Intent

I had the Bible down to a science:
Six days exactly to create
Seven years enough to destroy
Three days and nights to recreate
The Reed Sea or the Red Sea
The Brazen Sea and the Dead Sea
The sun stood still up in the sky
The waters flowed while crested high
Water to wine, crumbs to bread
Sight to the blind, life to the dead
From age unto apparent age
From miracle to explanation
The Bible was my science
And science my foundation

I had the Bible as my rulebook
Six-hundred thirteen laws to keep
Seven covenants in line
Three days and nights in the deep
The Decalogue, the Decalogue
The law of God in Christ
Adam, Noah, Abraham
Moses, Aaron, David, Christ
Don’t taste, don’t touch, don’t handle
Don’t listen, don’t eat, don’t refrain
Pray, don’t work, hold up your candle
Believe by heart but not by brain
The Bible was my only rule
My map and my all-purpose tool

The Bible was my worldview
Six-hundred sixty-six fears
Seven bowls, vials and trumpets
Three days and nights meaning years
See the news and wonder why
Eagles and dragons and bears- oh my!
Soon comes the rapture, the sweet by and by
Then a thousand and seven years
Feet of lead on statues of gold
The current news of prophecies old
This explains it all, so I am told
Soon there will be no more tears
The Bible explained the daily news
And validated all my views

The Bible was my self-help book
Six plus six numbered my steps
Seven times I fall and rise again
Forty days of purpose give me pep
Mindfully I meditate
The truth I seek to sublimate
The Wisdom gives holistic health
And, with positive thinking, wealth
My Guru showed the way to go
Death is a metaphor, you know
I’ll rise again, can’t keep me down
I’ll win the everlasting crown
The Bible told me where to go
Self-doubt’s the only Hell I know

It turns out the Bible is none of those
I don’t mean sort of, as far as it goes
It is just Jesus Christ, no more, no less
From the first Word to the final “Jesus”
It’s not about me, it’s not about you
Not about doing the good we can do
It’s not about how the world was made
Or how the good and bad finally get paid
It’s about Christ the Creator of all
It’s about Christ who fulfilled the whole law
It’s about Christ who’ll come back with a call
It’s about Christ who redeems from the fall
The Bible reveals to me Jesus
He is the only word of God to us
